Linton Legion team sweeps EdgeleyThe Linton American Legion Baseball team recorded its first doubleheader sweep of the season, when they traveled to Edgeley on June 25, and took a pair from their hosts. Linton evened its Section 2 record at 2-2, and improved to 8-10 overall with the sweep. Linton 13 Edgeley 10 Linton scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to break a 10-10 deadlock, and then held on for a 13-10 victory over Edgeley in the opening game, which counts in the section standings. Edgeley got on the board first with a run off Linton starter Ryan Hoffman in the bottom of the opening frame, but that would be the final lead of the contest for Edgeley. Justin Purintuns solo homerun in the top of the second tied the game, and Purintun and Brandon Weber each picked up RBI singles in the top of the 3rd to give Linton a 3-1 lead. Edgeley picked up single runs in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th innings to tie the game at 3 apiece, and then both teams rallied for 7 runs in the 5th inning to keep the game deadlocked. Purintun and David Hathaway each picked up 2-run singles in the 5th as Linton opened up what looked like a comfortable, 10-3 advantage. However, Ryan Hendrickson and Tyler Kosel each had 2-run hits to lead a 7-run rally in Edgeleys half of the inning, and a single by Alex Dias plated Corey Toay to tie the game (10-10). Linton answered right back in the top of the sixth, and this time, they were able to secure the lead. Colin Hulm drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single by David Hathaway, and came around on a single by Jamie Sathren for an 11-10 lead. Later, Kevin Schneider drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and Sathren later scored on a wild pitch for a 13-10 advantage. Edgeley brought the potential tying run to the plate in each of the final two innings, but Linton escaped each time without giving up a run. Edgeley had two on with two out in the 6th, but Schneider, who came on in relief in the 5th, got Kosel to ground into a force out at second. In the seventh, Edgeley loaded the bases with one out, but Schneider got Alex Gebhard to pop out to the shortstop, and then got Taylor Erickson to ground into a force out at second to preserve the victory. Schneider picked up the victory for Linton, allowing 7 runs on 9 hits and 4 walks with a pair of strikeouts in 3 innings of work. Hoffman, who did not figure in the decision, gave up 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts in 4 innings. Hendrickson, who came on in relief in the 5th inning, took the loss for Edgeley. Purintun went 3 for 4 with a homer, 2 runs and 4 RBI, while Hathaway (3 runs, 2 RBI) and Brandon Weber (2 RBI, run) each had a pair of hits for Linton. Sathren (RBI, 2 runs) and Nathan Meidinger (run) also had a hit for Linton. Dias, Simon Anderson and Travis Jonas had 3 hits, while Kosel (2 runs, 2 RBI) had 2 hits for Edgeley. Linton 8 Edgeley 5 Linton completed the doubleheader sweep of Edgeley with an 8-5 victory in the night cap, in a 5-inning game. Linton did all of its scoring in the 3rd (5 runs) and 5th (3 runs) innings, but that would be more than enough. Neither team got on the board until Linton put together its first rally in the top of the 3rd inning. Kevin Schneiders single scored Zach Tesky and Ryan Hoffman to start the rally, and Denton Kary added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. Max Lovell and Kary later scored on errors for a 5-0 cushion, and Linton never lost the lead again. Edgeley answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, and added another in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 5-3, but Tesky and Hoffman each picked up RBI singles in the top of the 5th to extend the lead to 8-3 heading into Edgeleys final at-bat. Edgeley did not go down easy in its final chance, pushing two runs across, and loading the bases with just one out. However, Purintun got Alex Gebhard to ground back to the mound to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat and the game. Nick Weismantel picked up the victory in his first outing of the season. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks with 3 strikeouts in 3 innings. Purintun gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts over the final two innings for the save. Corey Toay took the loss for Edgeley, allowing 8 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and 8 walks with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings. Brady Weber, Hoffman (RBI, run), Schneider (2 RBI, run), Kary (RBI, run), Weismantel and Tesky (RBI, 2 runs) each had one hit for Linton, while Taylor Erickson rapped a pair of hits to lead Edgeley. |
