10 YEARS AGO

July 4, 1998—Brothers Rick and Russ Lawler finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the Linton Lions Club Demolition Derby. Rick and Russ are the sons of Francis “Pork” and Marilyn Lawler of Linton. Jeremy Haid of Bismarck was the winner of the inaugural “Herby Derby,” and Cheryl Burgad of Bismarck won the Powder Puff derby.

25 YEARS AGO

July 1, 1983—The Linton American Legion team scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie Steele, and the game ended in a 5-5 deadlock due to darkness. It was the third tie in 8 games so far this season for Linton, which improved to 5-0-3 on the year. Wayne Nelson’s single scored Alan Dewald to start the final-inning rally, and later, Paul Horner rapped a 2-run triple, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Jamie Nelson pitched four innings of scoreless relief to help Linton overcome a 5-0 deficit.

50 YEARS AGO

July 4, 1958—Don Miller fired a 1-hitter as Strasburg shut out Linton, 3-0, in Beaver Valley League Baseball before a huge holiday crowd in Strasburg. Miller put his team on top to stay in the bottom of the first inning when he singled in Ernie Borr for the game’s first run. Strasburg added a pair of runs in the second inning, and Miller took care of the rest, walking 8 and striking out 4 in 9 innings. Don Peters took the loss on the hill for Linton.
